File out the gullets .

Recommended Posts

Just had a sharpen up . When the cutters get about halfway back I file the gullets so there is no chance of the side plate " rubbing " anyone else file the gullets ?

If you view the top plate from above you can see it tappers back so the more you file it the narrower it becomes . The gullet is the curved part under the top plate where yopui place the file . Because the file is not the same dia as the gullet you start to leave some of it behind the more you sharpen . You can get a condition ,where whats left of the original part of the gullet, is now wider than the widest part of the top plate and so will rub in the kirf .

a good mate tried to tell me about this last year and I still don't quite get it. do you mean the root of the cutter stays the same width while the head of the cutter is reducing due to the top plate taper or have I just made things worse?

as Telly Savalas said: a picture paints a thousand words, a couple of pictures would short thirds out?

This image from Madsens should describe clearly I think. It should not be a problem when using the correct size file though, unless you're doing that square grind thing our colonial cousins across the pond are so fond off?
