Any arbtalking veg growers in da house?

Mmmmh! That is the problem. I had vine weevil this year and slugs. You do need time to supervise your growings. Mice are another instant impact destroyer. Had rats one year climbing my sweet corn crop. Decimated it was.

Maybe let's go to the supermarket and be sheeple?

Nah! As Homer Simpson says "trying is the first step towards failure"

Gives me something to talk about.

When this book comes I'll be away in cloud cuckoo land. Until the poly tunnel spontaneously combusts with my hotbed.

Finished my first bit of hotbed today. About 5ft x 5ft square. Mixed 5 barrows of muck to one of fresh woodchip. Dug a foot deep. Piled it a foot above ground level and put soil back on top.

I thought I would have time in January but it's a struggle so far. Hopefully sow first salads next weekend. Continue the bed for some early potatoes.

Only made it in the poly tunnel so far.

Hope to make one outside as well.

It worked really well. I also cut top off an ibc cube filled it to the top almost with woodchip. A sheet of glass over the top and had a very hot propagator. That needs a layer if sand to diffuse it another time.

Back to the raised bed, had very early potatoes about the time jersey royals arrived in the shops. Salads went well. Then I run out if time. Now it's a mass of weeds.

It does work very well if you put the effort in and have the time.

Things got off to a slow start

Then summer (for a few days),

Then back to winter.

A great year for slugs, so far....

Also have a bit of chalk brood in a couple of bee hives, due to damp conditions and inconsistent temperatures.... ie, one wet miserable day followed by a nice sunny day, two cold North wind miserable days followed by a hot day, etc.

Cheers, steve

Had a mostly good year on the veg plot this year and have nets full of onions&potatoes which should last through the winter. Its been a good year for apples as well so I bought a cheap cider press and have started pulping&pressing the apples into juice to ferment into cider. Should be ready to drink for winter solstice/xmas/new year. Happy days.

This thread is making me hungry. Not a very productive year for me - busy with weddings and things. My peppers are fruiting however - but I doubt they will ripen properly as it's too late in the year now.

Made some progress with my tree seed gathering and prep though!
