Husqvarna 61 (orange top) coil

Hi. Apols for starting a new thread. I am new to this forum and this seemed the best place to put this post.

I have an old Husky 61 - how old I'm not sure as it came to me at least second hand. It has run well and done a lot of cutting. It recently cut out while in the middle of logging. Checked fuel - plenty. No amount of tugging and swearing would restart it. Left it inside for a day as it was a wet day when it died. Still no good.

Changed the plug - no good. Checked for a spark - no spark (even in the dark in case it was hard to see). Checked fuel was getting to the cylinder - fine. Suspected the kill switch so isolated. Still no spark. So tending to suspect the coil. Coil is the 'new' sort and looks original (#5036202-03). Number doesnt match anything I can find as a replacement. I have had #503901401 and #544018401 suggested as replacements.

So questions are:

Given my work so for - is it likely to be the coil?

Are the online 'cheap' replacements worth it. eg ]HUSQVARNA 50/51/55/61/254262 SEE LIST IGNITION COIL NEW | eBay

The saw is old and I am a bit reluctant to throw 75 quid at it unless I have to? That said, it is an old buddy.

Any advice on the correct part number?

Thanks, John

Hi - thanks for the link.

The metal tag says Husqvarna 61, 5250702, Sweden. Which of that is the year? No other tags on the saw.

Thanks John

The early saws don't have the date of manufacture incorporated in to the serial number but reckon it will be circa 30 years old.

Personally I would by a second hand OEM part rather than aftermarket - you may find someone on this site has one spare.

Worth trying to re gap the coil a little closer to the coil - try a sheet of typical A4 paper and try again before junking it.

Cheers Spud.

I assume there is enough 'play' in the 2 screws holding the coil to the chassis to allow me to shift it a tiny bit nearer the flywheel magnets.

There always is and is how you adjust the gap - just slide the paper in and bring the magnets round and let them pull the coil toward the flywheel.

Most of the plastic parts will have a date stamped into them - it's usually a round mark with the last two numbers of the year (if it's still fairly legible you might be able to pick out the month from around the edge.

Whilst it's not fool proof as parts could have been replaced over the years, if enough bits give the same year there's a reasonable chance it's right or at least fairly close.
