Bat Surveys

Can anyone tell me what the requirements are for this, I read there was some kind of licence you must obtain to carry out this type of work?

 

Do any of you carry out bat surveys, if you do can you tell us all whats involved.

not sure about a license, theres certainly a course to sit though

a bloke i work for is going on that course, i may join him, there is a **** load of money in bats, is it something like 5k every bat you kill??

Changes toHabitat Regulations Bats and a few other species have increased protection now. If you damage their habitat, it is an offence full stop, whether you took reasonable precautions beforehand or not.

 

You need a licence to handle bats, that much I know.

I did the bats in arb course last year, mostly because I'm into bats. It was interesting but basically warns you that bats can be almost any place.. which isn't that helpfull in the real world. Did tell us who to call if you disturb a roost etc. But with up to a 5K fine per bat if I did disturb one I'm not sure I'd want English nature to know..

 

It was not related to surveys however.

I've been on the phone today to a bat expert and bat surveyer, he told me you should be defra licenced to be taken seriously! becoming a licenced can take a year of training with another bat expert.

 

Without the licence your survey will not be taken seriously by local authoritys, and its local authoritys who ask for them in the first place.

Been on to the AA today and no way does the course they run qualify you to carry out bat surveys.
