Good thanks Ben,

I tried googling Massaria in the USA but didn't find much.

If it is Massaria then removal is critical if they are above targets. Still no fatalities here in the UK but there have been a growing number of near misses.

Have you seen the Massaria guidance document on this thread.....

http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-health-care/66452-massaria-disease-plane-practical-management-guidance.html

Useful info on the disease and recommendations for inspection and prunning works.

Imagine as that guidance was developed in London it would be as relevant for the big apple.

.

I read this a week or two David.

Yeah I saw that too Gary, not entirely sure on what the Americans do in terms of Massaria management but the article suggests the tree hadn’t been inspected for almost 2 years and you have to wonder about the bench being sited directly under low lateral spreading London plane branches.

I wonder at the confidence level for massaria inspections each time I sit and have lunch in Russell Square on my annual pilgrimage to the smoke

Some big arsed London planes in Russell Square. Imagine LB Camden are all over the branches from inspection POV. Would be interesting to know if the placement of benches is random or strategic in terms of location outside or under canopy branches.

How do you manage to eat your lunch, with your fingers crossed?

I suspect David is right and the benches are not directly under the crowns but of course many groups sit on the grass on a sunny day. Yes being a worrier by nature I do listen out for any cracking.
