Another good way of keeping fuel costs down is keep the electric gismos off. In the winter seat heaters really kill the fuel consumption along with anything else heated. I remember being taught as an apprentice the alternator belt when loaded up draws the same amount of power as the rear wheel on a 50cc moped

Driving slowly doesn't improve the wear and tear, if anything it's worse, high gear low revs puts strain on the engine, especially the belts, if it's timing belt rather than gears then the belt is more likely to stretch. Same with chain drive.

Newer cars do not use fuel when going downhill in gear. Older ones do, diesels do I'm afraid unless it is a new car that is designed to with electronic injection.

Example, a discovery uses fuel going down hill as the pump is timed to the engine speed by timing belt, engine goes faster pump goes faster, the only thing stopping it from flying off down the hill is the restriction by the throttle pedal and cable set up.

A nice new merc will not use fuel as it is electronic injection, computer tells it when to inject not the engine speed. If you get what I mean.

My question is did anyone care about mpg when fuel was cheap? If it didn't bother us then why is it now?

I drive a discovery 1, 2 1/2 diesel turbo. Suppose to do 29 mpg, unlikely I get that as I've never looked into it.
