shot gun licence

Ask. I don't shoot towards roads at all, shoot from the roadside in field other side of hedge etc, if you can see the road don't shoot. Seen people shooting up to 300 yards away from road and the shot lands on road.

Always shoot away from roads or buildings. It's all common sense into play.

I didn't know there was a legal distance from a road... We shoot from just inside a roadside hedge at home....

I know that when you get your first firearms license for a high powered rifle they inspect the land you're using it on to make sure it's suitable....

Yep, they also look into footpaths etc. discretion is best with shotguns, if you don't feel right don't pull the trigger.

one question im unsure about is what is the legal distance you can shoot from the road?

Off the top of my head it is something like 60 feet from the centre line of a road, i.e. you could according to this law alone shoot from the hard shoulder of the M6 however you would be in breach of the law which covers causing distress to the public.

You will not (usually) be asked technical questions, it isn't a test but an assessment of your suitability to hold a licence.

They will just have a chat about things in general basic gun saftey. look at the cabinet and ask where you are going to keep the cartridges. Make a good cup of tea to ther liking. If your not sure about anything ask thats what they are there for.

You can shoot within 50 feet of the centre of a public highway back towards land you have permission to shoot on, provided it does not cause distress or inconvenience etc to users of the highway.

In summary.

Its part of the road traffic act, I believe.

However, common sense should prevail when you are shooting near the road.

I never got the ammo thing with shotguns and firearms, you can mail order as many shells as you want but limited on firearms? I could fill my house with shells and it's legal, but with firearms ammo it's all restricted?

Doesn't make much sense IMO.

Don't worry about the visit, ask if you want to about distances! They will not judge you by it as you are being responsible by asking information like this to make sure you are safe.

Don't loose any sleep over it.
