scared of heights?

Im a fairly new climber and seem to possess a fairly irrational fear of not having access to get to the floor anytime when up a tree. Be it off just dangling off the short lanyard, or being up a big tree with a climline too shot to get us to the ground from the TIP if need be. I find it bestows confidence in me; if all goes tits up i can get to the floor in one rappel (without having to change over coming down) maybe i should invest in a rope wrench to obtain the dynamic psychological equilibrium we all need when climbing :thumbup1: or maybe i should just man up and grow some balls :confused1:

You shouldnt be up a tree if you rope is not long enough to get down in one go!!

Change overs on the way down????!!! NO. Of course you can if you want, but you shouldnt need to in order to get down.

I'm in the fear of ladders camp.... not too bad to access a tree but get me up a set to clean windows or get on a roof ladder and disco leg kicks off,

I also get vertigo when I top out when I'm rock climbing,

I've had a few wobbles on large poles too... just comes from nowhere...

Its a healthy fear and has kept me safe and alert when undertaking work/leisure with risk involved..

It has also allowed me time to readdress my work plan and on occasion has allowed me to make a better decision.

embrace the fear use it and allow it to guide you not rule you.... take care all....

Positive mental attitude always helps me along when the onset of disco leg arrives. I take a minute to collect my thoughts and then picture in my head exactly how the next step is going to take place.

Imagine a little video clip of you rigging the limb etc, your face cut, the perfect back cut, you picture the limb folding down and breaking away. The lowering line becomes taught and the limb gets slowly lowered down. Picture the big grin on your face.

Now you know how your going to do it and have pictured it going to plan, crack on ;-)

I have a fear of my anchor point failing. I climber near me came out a tree when his anchor point failed on him, it wasn't even a small anchor point, it must have been 20 to 30 cm across. A freak thing I know but it wrecks my nerves sometimes when I look up and realize how small my anchor point is. It doesn't help that I absolutely hate heights, but I'm also sure this is what keeps my climbing, love the rush it gives me.

Mind you dont get too hooked on that rush, it can lead to "extravagant climbing" as you find you have to go a little fastr a little harder a bigger swing etc to get the rush!:001_smile:
