Looking at maybe setting up for milling.

Got a bit of land to do it on, got to get the mill, just wondering what you do with it. I haven't got a use for the timber that would be milled so it is just a try it and see how I get on type thing, I'm always up for trying new things.

It can be a tricky thing selling the timber... I've often found it's finished products that sell better.

Oak posts always seem to be sought after...

Perhaps ask around a bit first and see if it gets anyone interested.

I don't sell anything, but I don't buy any timber either, as in from B&Q or the like. I mill everything from bits of boat to bits of house (entire extension - even the tile batten has been cleft from sweet chestnut) and some nice stuff air drying which will become everything from longcase clock cases to bedroom furniture once the extension is finished.

It depends on what you enjoy. If you really enjoy the milling aspect, making rustic furniture won't take very long so you'll mill a lot. If you're into cabinetmaking you'll spend very little time milling compared with working it but then you can get the best out of the colour and grain.

Up until now I have been cutting it rather thick up to 4" for wood turning - will have a load of oak in a few weeks, also have a very large Sweet Chestnut to cut and mill! New bar I think, its 5'+ dia, a huge tree that has seen better days.
