I have been a tree surgeon for 11 years and am getting a business plan together to go it alone. One thing that I'm struggling with is how or where to dispose of chippings?! Does anyone have any info that may be useful in finding somewhere?

Also any advice on getting started in general would be much apreciated. Many thanks.

When you go into business remember you will work a lot more hours than you ever planned for. 5 days a week cutting leaving at 8 back at 5 then out pricing which takes time then the paperwork and all the stress involved its no easy ride. There are many weeks when I could be doing 50+ hours if I wasn't careful. Also remember when going into business and you price a job don't just see a wage as there are a ridiculous amount of expenses. On the chippings front make a few contacts with farmers and the like. Don't afraid to be cheeky by knocking on a farm door. The worse they can do is say no or shoot you.

I've been going it alone on the tree front while landscaping as well. I've made, in 4 days, more PROFIT than I earn wages for a whole month of landscaping. That's profit AFTER paying climbers and groundies. Must be doing something right, for once in my life :)

I think everyone needs to drive prices up a bit, and drop the number of hours/days worked. That way there'll be more to go round.

Yes yes yes!!! Dropping prices to be competitive is the stupidest thing ever. So short sighted, a real quick fix to a long term problem.

Lowering prices puts you closer to cowboys and gypos. The public will find it harder to differentiate and then they will think the professionals can't be a lot better if they're only charging a little more.

Stupid stupid stupid!

Charge as much as you possibly can and you still won't be charging as much as a plumber!

Driving prices up at a time when competition is so great is a dangerous method though. You might make more on the jobs you get but could be losing out overall from jobs you don't get. As much as I'd like it to work as we'd all get paid more, I think it would do the opposite and give more work to the cowboys. Fools are cheap, good businessman are competitive ... expensive limits you to number of willing customers.
