How much to sharpen££??

I have been asked to sharpen a 404 chain with a bench grinder. The chain is off a 4ft bar and is a 404.

There is a second chain off a 3ft bar and is a 404 as well.

Haven't got a clue how much to charge as I only really do my own with the grinder if the chain is really knackered.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Time and effort mate, what would be an hourly rate for you, don't forget power for the grinder. If its too knackerd new chain.

I would prob charge 20 quid if it's one chain, takes time to sharpen right, plus you will be changing the angle of the grinder from your normal operating.

But then I have been in the same boat before and sharpened for a friend, didn't charge him as he helped me out a few times.

How close a friend is it?

wow, I must be way too cheap. I sharpen 100's of chains at a fixed rate of £7.50 inc vat. Most of them are domestics off 12 - 15" bars as most pro customers with the larger chains like to sharpen them themselves.

I do get the occasional 3/8 84 link which I still do for £7.50 but in reality it should be double that.

The problem with commercial sharpening is getting the price right in relation to a new chain.

Power consumption is minimal and it only takes a few seconds to set the angles. Changing the stone takes a little longer so I tend to batch the chains and do the large 3/8 seperately.

If I am too cheap please tell me!

It's all about the recession. Lol.

Maybe I am too expensive but then I don't do it a lot as I tend to get the pro users who sharpen there own and only come to me to get new chains off the rack.

Had to sharpen the bosses 880 today, that took some time and I had to have a break half way before changing sides, don't like doing it and try not to.

I think your bob on there at that price.... as for the above post, 20.00 a chain lol thats a rediculous price..... 20 quid for both maybe thats more realistic due to the size of the chain's......
