Regardless of personal feelings for the sycamore I don't think it has a place in ancient woodland does it?

I think it is a species not to be mixed up with certain woodland species or make ups for sure.

 

think its real potential is as a crop.

So as an interim summary, reducing the sycamore population would be a good thing for the long term. I especially think this ia key as there are lots of saplings and young tree's in variuos areas. I will look deeper into what effect they are having. Also the holly has to be reduced because it's taken over large area's and again I will look into what effect its having on the grown. Would it be acceptable to chip and spray the holly?

I don't know much but probably not. Leave them in habitat piles. If you chip and spray them you will increase soil nutrients and then things like nettles will take over which may be detrimental to any of the ancient woodland ground flora you have present.

nettles will be short lived as the canopy closes the gaps, chip on the forest floor is to be encouraged IMO

But would the chip act as a mulch and suppress the growth of everything, including the things you want there. Would it be easier, cheaper, and less time consuming to remove the Holly and leave intact as deadwood habitat. I can't see a benefit to chipping it.

well thats because you arent a fungus, or any other soil born organism! including trees!

 

chipping would be sporadic, contractors are lazy the fire it into bulk lumps rather than a spread, providing a niche in a woodland that would not exist otherwise, increasing biodiversity and supressing very little oustside of the chip pile.

Unless they blow big heaps of chip under the retained veteran trees including heaped up the trunks

or worse, fire the chip directly at stems and debark them!
