Australia is it really worth it??

Hello,

I have family in Melbourne who I use as a base for my cycling trips.

I've never worked there but spent many months now intimately in touch with the place as only cycling can bring you so close to a place as a tourist whilst covering amazing distances.

The thing that strikes me is that Oz life is either one of a highly suburban life, malls and air-con or bush living, 4x4s, air-con, dust and flies.

I loved the cities, they are really alive, multi-cultural and very clean.

The bush, well its an adventure all right.

Alice is a dirty dusty dangerous hole full of drunken natives, white and black.

Yet after being offered a job (not in arb work) with the family firm I declined.

Oz lacks the intimacy and compactness of Europe.

I'm no beach bum, I like to ride a bike through hills and dales, cool leafy lanes and enjoy country pubs, tea rooms, country walks and a European climate.

I could have done a short stint, a year or two but to live there...?

I'll keep Oz for the holidays.

Now N.Z...thats a different bush kettle of tea!

I would be more than happy doing extended holidays of perhaps 2-3 months at a time....but not just Oz, NZ, South America, Himalayas.

 

I like home too much to move away full time, and if i get my business running the way i have set my goals, then taking 2 months out could be a possibility

There is a TV series called "Wanted down Under" which is all about moving to OZ and NZ. I think there is also a revisited to see what happened to those in the previous series.

It is an utterly awesome place, unbelievable on so many levels. I love Oz.

 

BUT - I couldn't live there full time. I'd miss my family/friends/shooting/proximity to Europe too much.

 

If my numbers came up, I'd love to split life between if I could.

 

My mate and my sister in law went to Brisbane 4 years ago, and I can't see them coming back. The quality of life they have with their 2 girls (11 & 9) is fantastic.

Ive just come back from Oz. Melbourne... in answer to your question yes it is worth it. i was contracting for 6 companys in and around Melbourne. The money for a contractor is between $350 and $500 a day, dont expect regular work at $500 and you need all kit, and will almost certainly be working with unskilled and poorly equiped crews. If your good you will work for $400-$425 a day every day no gaps. at the moment thats about £230. The pay for good climbers employed is $25-$30 as far as i know expect to be called a pommy c**t ever 5 minutes, and drink lots of VB at the yard.

 

Word of warning though. The Ozzy boys are really really good at removing big trees because its a big part of the work there. You will find yourself out of work very quickly if you give it the big one.

If I was in the Uk, hell yeah. Now I'm in NZ, not so much. If I was to offer advice; don't go to your grave wondering what could have been. If it doesn't work you can always go back to England.

 

6 years ago i had a 3 motnh harvest in Oz lined up and bottled it as a result of a relationship problem. i have regretting that decision everyday for six years. now me and my girl are planning on a 2 month trip to NZ next christmas time. I CANT WAIT!

its always good to try different things and places... if you like sun, beaches, surf and contact with wildlife I would recommend you to go. Despite the fact, australia pays well and I 've been there recently and is not that expensive.

Good experience for a few years.

Just one point, not sure how old you are brothergrim but once you turn 30 you will not be able to get a working holiday visa, choice of how you travel to oz is very limited, i could only really travel out on a 457 purely because i didnt have lots of money in the bank, and all my qualifications are (trade) tickets, NPTC, i didnt do a college course

 

you have to either have these tickets converted at various costs or have every piece of info to support each ticket including when you sat the test, instructor, how many hours spent on each ticket possible a letter from each assessor the list goes on and on, then you have to send it to the TRA and be assessed

 

i failed the TRA so i didnt qualify to be level 3 cert, luckly at the moment arborist is still classed as a gardener, but the immi govement change they're mind like the wind,

 

as i have advised guys who have contacted me the quickest way you can get here, start working and find out whether you like it is to get a working holiday visa and experience it first hand,
