Used to run that activity for groups. If the rigging is solid and the kit in good nick its fairly safe. The damage to ropes (we used to tripple up the climbing lines) was more from rubbing on the edges than the shock of the fall - well below a fall factor of 1 (vertical fall divided by length rope used to stop fall).

It was / is a complete head game, we used have about a 60% refusal rate at first attempt.

We had to stop using the site we had sorted after Railtrack started to do maintenance and didn't want us their "for health and safety reasons"

Couple of pro outfits in NZ do that bridge jumping. You can apy to have a go. Unfortunately there was one example of someone a year or two ago who (apparently) was too busy talking on the phone to remember to tie the rope to the anchor point and the lady on the other end of the rope hit the river bed. OSH took the guy to court for the fatality...obviously.

Check these guys out. This is a bunch of russians in Kjerag, Norway. A popular site for big wall base jumping. Thay are doing over 1000 foot freefalls on ropes!!!
