There are only a few ex-pat arbs operating here.

Sadly, there is a bitter rivalry between a few individuals.

I had an email from one with who I have a good professional relationship with to tell me that his domain had been copied with an 'a' put in front.

A rival has seen fit to try and steal clients using this sneaky method.

Neither of these guys has actually using their business names as their domain names UNLIKE me!

In France, your trading name is protected by law.

It is registered at the Chamber of Commerce in your area.

So, you just can't start up a business that calls itself http://www.anotherjardinieranglais.com

or

abetterthantheoriginallejardinieranglais.com

There can be only one 'Le Jardinier Anglais' :001_cool:

As above really, I'm trying to build my own website.

Nothing fancy, basically all it has to do is state the services I offer and get people to be able to contact me easily. I want to put some signs up where I'm working as it's along a very busy road and next month will be around the corner along an eve busier road (hedgelaying) and thought a catchy web-adress is easier to remeber for the drive-by potential customer. I've registered both DanielDoes.com and .co.uk (I'm Daniel and I do stuff, sometimes...) but wich one do I use?

Is .co.uk more "homely" or is it just more to remember?

Is .com too "corporate", or "international" or just easy?

Or do I worry too much about the details:biggrin:

Cheers, Daniel

Hi Daniel,

There are a few differences between the two top level domain names, as .com addresses are governed by ICANN & UK domains ie .co.uk / .org.uk etc are governed by Nominet. A UK domain is cheaper for registry fees.

I would personally register & host a .co.uk address particularly if your venture is UK based.

.com would still be fine, I think clients are more comfortable with .co.uk

I find sometimes spam bots 'harvest' the registrars email address from the WHOIS registry and its advisable to select a secondary e-mail address with which to register your domain.

Be aware there are some companies that act in an underhand manner with domains, in that they will send you what looks like official paperwork which if returned, ends up transferring your domain to another host that charges a lot to host it, essentially they are scams. I think thats the best way to describe it without swearing!

Thanks for all replies.:thumbup1:

It seems everyone agrees that .co.uk is the way to go.

As I own both, I'll redirect .com to .co.uk and watch .com for a year or two. If it gets no or little traffic I'll let it go again. It cost me £10 to get .com for a year but renewal might be more(?) captive market and all...:sneaky2:

It was Mrs Rover who suggested .com might be better, she likes to think big hence falling for me:thumbup:. I do do some work in the Netherlands as well but it's normally pre-arranged and not dependant on advertising. I though .co.uk might make people feel more at ease, as it's a bit less faceless.

Thanks for the warnings of fraud as well.

I'm normally quite good at spotting a scam but it's good to be aware.

Cheers, Daniel
