oak pollards

Priced a job today re-pollarding oaks. The client,who used to do them himself, asked me to leave 1 branch at least 10cms in diameter to help get the oak started ths following spring. I know they do this in france, you see the oak pollards in the countryside pruned this way. i haven't a problem with it. Just wondered what you think.does it really help? He said you only need to do it to oak pollards....

Are we talking veteran Trees here Perci?

 

I've seen these left on Tilia, Fraxinus and Fagus.

 

In the case of old Beech pollards, the restoration process is greatly helped with Sap Risers left on.

 

One consideration, would be too much light being introduced to the newly opened top of the Boling, which can lead to failure.

This should be accomplished over time, not too suddenly.

 

Weirdly enough, it would appear Oak is more susceptable than Beech to this effect. :confused1:
