441 C-E tuning problems

We purchased a new 441 C-E 6 months ago and last week we had a problem starting it and when it eventually started tick over and full throttle running was rough. We returned it to the dealer and he said that they did not have the equipment to tune the new saws with eletronic ignition and that the equipment is not yet avalable from stihl for the dealers. The dealer tried twice to sort the problems but the saw is still not running right. I returned the saw yesterday for the dealer to send it back to stihl. Have any body else had problems with this saw?

I'm assuming you mean the MS 441 C-M ?

(A model with C-E means it has ErgoStart/Easy2Start)

Without getting into to much detail; The MS441 C-M has a fully electronic M-Tronic engine management system. When working correctly it regulates the ignition timing and electronically adjusts the fuel flow, taking external conditions into account.

The dealer is right in some respects. Stihl are supposed to be making software based diagnostic equipment for the M-Tronic saws but it hasn't been released yet. (Husky are no better with Autotune). It isn't tuning equipment though rather diagnostic equipment.

However, until then he should be able to test with a multimeter in conjunction with the M-Tronic test lead, part number 5910 840 0903. There are "target values" in the Tech Bulletins for the Solenoid Valve, Micro Switch, Wiring Harness etc. He may have been doing this though... did he try swapping components for known good ones?

Yes I did mean MS 441 C-M, the dealer spoke to stihl and did try and fix the saw themselves but they were not happy with the way it was running and asked me to try it. I dont thing they had the parts to swap as they said this is the first saw with engine management they have had to repair and they did not have a new 441 C-M in the shop.

  • 2 months later...

ive had one of these for a few months now, in the summer it worked fine, but was over inscotland in dec, and it started stalling intermittently? sometimes ticking over fine, other times cutting out, always restarting with no fuss straight away?

i changed it to the winter setting (air temp was just below freezing) but it didnt seem to help?

took it to the local dealer last week, and he used it all day, and it didnt cut out once? it was about 4 degrees c here, used it today and it didnt cut out once?

im wondering if theyre not too great when its really cold?

not overly fussed as fingers crossed rarely work in minus conditions, but will be a bit peeved if it starts stalling all the time.
