Tar type exudate

Have seen a tar type exudate on the bark of ash and lime, have ruled out the possiblity of it being random tar or bitumen as it follows a callus pattern on the tree bark in a couple of different places.

 

Am pretty sure there has been a thread about this but can't find it, can anyone advise?

I looked at a load of manky trees today including an Ash with a bark exuding a black fluid. I have a poor pic if you want, I have not seen this on Ash before but there was a cavity at the base of the stem below with a well formed brown rot .

Maybe Bulgaria canker (Bulgaria inquinans). Does it look as if a thick black tar is oozing between the "plates" in the bark?

 

Sometimes Phytopthera exudate can also look like this.

 

Bulgaria canker can be fatal but is more often disfiguring. Phytopthera, depending on species, location and extent, could be more serious.

Just a thought...have the trees been subject to flooding (standing water for a long time) ? We have many trees that have suffered greatly in the last 12 months. They nearly all have Phytophthora now, including Beech, Lime, Chestnut and Monkey Puzzle!

Thanks Gents, I fear this may turn out to be a red herring, thanks Scott but I don't think it Bulgaria inquinans, and no John they've not been standing in water, but thanks for the suggestion. That was the thread Monkeyd, and it's ruled that out too!

I have been wondering today if it is vestiges of some kind of wound treatment....

The picture helps. Looks like one of the Hypoxylon spp. to me. Not sure about the prognosis, but I'm sure I remember hearing about a disease syndrome which one or more Hypoxylon spp. was involved and the prognosis was poor. Sorry I can't remember more at this stage.
