Fomes fomentarius locator

In five years I have yet to see Fomes fomentarius in my area, Essex or North Essex to be precise. I believe birch and beech are the common hosts.

Has anyone seen Fomes in Essex?

Not in Essex specifically, but starting to see it a lot more often down here in the south east now that I have my eye in.

 

We have it on Oak, Beech & Birch at Hampstead & i've come across it on Birch in woodland in East Hertfordshire.

I developed a great deal of interest in this fungi when I discovered its fire tinder uses, not a bad looker too.

I'll keep my eye out I'm sure its here somewhere...does it seem favour any environmental conditions?

It appears random in it's development & location.

 

Seems to prefer woodland rather than open grown trees, but I have seen pictures of it on single standing park trees.

 

Very rare on Birch down here in the south east, so concentrate on Beech mainly.

 

Epping forest with all it's Beech pollards would be a logical site to find it at, that's over your neck of the woods.

It is a funny thing when I started looking for fungus when studying arb, as you discover their past uses they take on a new life. Less like the tree killers they first appear.

Makes them easier to remember too.
