Hi Doug.  Not 100% but it looks suspiciously like a Four-banded Longhorn (Leptura quadrifasciata).  Nice find if it is.

Giant wood wasp ?


Yep, apparently also known as a greater horntail. Just been reading up about them. Harmless to us humans, but they love spruce for laying eggs in. The larvae can live for 2+ years in the wood before emerging as another big nasty. Glad all the spruce I’ve got will be going into the stove well before they come out!!
