Thought you guys might enjoy this. Did 12 of these, about 10" on the stump in less than an hour.

Very smart indeed Brendon, thanks for taking the time.

Although, was that the owner at the end, looking around thinking.......they've taken down the wrong trees? :001_tongue:

Out of interest B, why were they removed, looks like a fair bit of care had gone into there establishment, with the mulching n'all?

Cheers

David

They were planted too deep, there was branches coming out of the ground. We might pull the stumps, so I won't be surprised if they are also just sitting in their burlap and twine just how they came from the nursery. Add the regular mulch volcano every year and you have even more trouble. We planned on taking down 7, they were crowding the existing Maples, and were suffering. The last 5 looked terrible now that the other's where gone, so out they went. He's got some nice Maples that can flourish better now, everything was over crowded.

We pruned about a half dozen others that day.

Just got back from hiking the redwoods again, the last half of last week.

Here's one from Prairie Creek redwoods state park.

Mario,

until I finally drag mr sorry behind over to your fine shores, there's one thing you need to help me with.

Please describe the sounds & scents of that environment for me :001_smile:

Too bad that video can't capture much of that. And it changes season to season and park to park.

I can share a couple of thoughts about the sounds.

When the wind is still, its exceptionally quiet. My mother said it was the most peaceful place she had ever been when I took her at age 89.

If the wind is blowing, the wind rushing through the crowns sounds a lot like the ocean. That's the only thing that comes to mind.

The echos are different too. In winter, raindrops landing in seasonal ponds made a sound that was almost musical last winter in Women's federation grove. Unlike raindrops I heard in other forests.

Some parks have less birds, because there are not a lot of insects in some groves. But Prairie Creek has these crows and ravens that sound as if it were some tropical island. Again, because of how their calls echo.

Many forests have creaking, so that you should be familiar with. Only maybe bigger and louder in some redwood areas.

Thanks Mario. :thumbup1:

What's with the lack of insects in some of the groves? :confused1:

Surely not for lack of dead wood?

.

Redwood does not get a lot of insects. There is not much decay either. So not the mushroom population of the hemlock and spruce forests nearby.

Some groves like Tall Trees Grove that have a good mix of species including Douglas fir, etc., seem to have a bigger range of insects. And more colorful mushrooms too.

The amphibians vary too. Tall Trees Grove and Redwood Creek seem to have a lot of frogs. Especially a hoard of miniature ones along Redwood Creek.
