Not too big, just slung too low.

Yep i agree, slung too low but you got to be carefull with pop's that you don't get carried away taking big lumps, the weaker wood thoughts in the back of your mind make you sling it just that bit lower than you would normally.

He'll know next time though.

Spread the load with more attachment points, one low down for lift, 5 or 6 spider leg attachments would be plenty for that kind of wide spreading tree.

Does anyone mind my asking, why was a crane being used in the first place? Why not climb and drop/lower smaller bits? Am I missing something?

cranes are generally used far more often in the states than here
