Unimogs rock thread

I don't know really. Its quiet high spec and mechanically good condition cab lets it down a little so would like 22k. They do seem to fetch a lot but they are great bits of kit. Will be sad to see it go.

 

A couple of questions if I may.

 

How many years have you been a mog owner.

 

Have you had a lot of unforeseen bills due to break down?

 

How much does it cost in parts and labour to service and maintain?

 

Would you say it would go in the same place off road that a tractor would?

I have had many Mog's over about the last 15 years.

 

I have found them always to be very good off road but they do have there limits. I have found they will often get where a standard tractor will struggle and vice Versa. But generally very good.

 

I have always found them reliable if well maintained. I get my parts from merex in Germany and can't rate them high enough. Some parts can get expensive but that's the same with lots of kit these days. They are serviced in house so can't really comment on cost. It's trying to find a competent place happy to take them on which is the tricky bit I think.

this is something often bandied about when mogs are talked about, cost of running and maintenance, the honest answer, for a competent mechanic, no more expensive than any other large tractor or large commercial. yes a lot of specialist parts, but the run of the mill service stuff is std commercial, and most of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems are again, commercially sourced. Ma benz isnt stupid, there are plenty of suppliers out there making parts for commercial manufacturers, there lifted off the shelf and integrated into the build, the expense comes when the owner/mechanic wont do there homework and goes straight to the dealer parts counter, thats where they make there money. its very rare that the "specialist " parts go wrong, except for breakage(missuse or lack of maintenance being the most common faults), and for what they are, these arent too bad. most of the problems come from the myth that they are so special, you need an expensive fitter to work on them, they are anything but, remember these are machines that were concieved in the aftermath of the last war, and unless you are wealthy enough to be running one of the fancy modern ones, have no electronics, good old simple mechanical bits, and with a proper set of manuals, which detail everything, a good mechanic, with a good set of tools, can service, repair, rebuild, anything on these trucks (okay, some jobs which require specialist machining facillites, need to be farmed out, but this is the same with any mechanical servicing).

I'll give it a go, I'm just learning as I do it

 

I suggest asking at the paint shop for advice.I bumped into the guy who painted my first one,he advised a couple of clear coats.

 

I wish he had had the time to paint my other one,he was well worth the money.

We are running 5 Unimogs at present all repairs and servicing are done in house, of all the kit we have they are fairly easy to work on when you know how, we have a mobile agricultural engineer who helps with the more complicated tasks.

 

There is not much we haven't done, one engine rebuild, one complete engine replacement, clutches replaced, gearbox rebuilds, portal hubs rebuilt, air brakes installed amongst many other repairs and maintenance. Engine rebuilds or swaps take about a week in our yard.

 

When it comes to parts though yes you can shop around but sometimes we need parts fast so go to main dealers and pay the premium everyday a Unimog is out of action is a massive loss as it impacts everything.

 

Yes they can cost a bit to run like all things if you can utilise them what they cost to run will not be a factor.

 

That's the point though, in my opinion they are not the ultimate vehicle, I'd rather not be running them or at least not 5 of them it's a headache to keep them mobilised and working making sure they earn their keep. If we started all over again knowing what I do now I wouldn't invest in Unimogs so heavily.
