any value in sweet chestnut as fire wood??

Hi all,

 

im looking at a job tomorrow there is approx 80 acres os sweet chestnut to be coppiced all different sizes to large stems. ive not seen the site but in the past companies have brought standing timber on the site, felled the trees, extracted and sold the timber etc....

 

if the site has good access for timber extraction is there any value in sweet chestnut as firewood?? i know its one of the worst timbers for firewood because it spits. can it be used for any thing else? i dont want to get into making fencing products from the wood. I woul only have time to fell the trees and get them roadside.

 

what could it fetch roadside or delivered??

 

any input would be great.

we sell hardly anything else as firewood (once we have sorted out the good stuff for splitting up for fencing etc)

I think if it was no good for firewood, a lot of log suppliers in Kent would starve.

i dont think its bad for firewood.....so long as its a wood burner and not an open fire. and one thing it certainly has in its favour is it burns down to pretty much nothing

considering i'm selling cbm willow at £70/bag and having repeat custom, i'd say chestnut would be worth even more, just state that it's for closed fires only. have also sold willow in small "garage forecourt" nets very successfully.

 

i believe chestnut is sometimes known as "poor man's oak". says it all really.

so the next question is what do you think i could sell it for roadside?

 

just trying to work out some costing before i look at the job. ive been told the jobs mine if i want it and as payment i can have all of the timber. so just seeing if its financialy viable as im used to getting paid for tree work and not having to sell the timber.

I've looked at the job and there is about 200 tonns plus in the first phase of work. The trees varry from one foot up to three foot at the base. What price could I get road side as firewood?? Any help would be great
