I meant a hydraulic pecker for the digger, you can really bust up rings with them:thumbup1: Kit gets my vote everyday. Just join a gym mate if you are getting fat:biggrin: thats what i did:blushing:

Pecker for the digger, Never thought of that. If it worked ok it would save a helluva lot of time and also no need for a second man. Cheers for the heads up Stevie.:thumbup1: Just goes to show twenty years splitting wood and you can still learn new tricks through ARBTALK

Stevies tip about using a tyre for hand splitting was a winner. Coupled with the Gransfors splitting axe, the hydraulic splitter has stayed in the shed most of the time this year.

I will say at this point I don't see my logs as a commercial enterprise as such.

Keeps me busy in crap weather, only sell to regulars, work short hours etc.

Can do about 5m3 a day cutting and splitting if I need to, but that is working hard. Half that leaves me time to read James Bond books by the brazier and walk the dogs at 3.

And leave no cut and split stuff for the doasyoulikeys to thieve during the night. If they want to lift the cord they can do the hard bit themselves!

6 foot and just over 12 stone Lorry, an extra kilo or 2 and i feel bloated:laugh1:

The pecker will split whole trunks. So if you break them up then stack them all with the grab they dry very quickly. say 8 foot lengths.

You can only really quarter them at most, it is all to do with the wedge shape. cut in half and you get a half moon, that will fall open nicely, nice and easy to half again BUT now you have more of a triangular shaped wedge, not easy to pin with the pecker, if you get good, you can nudge the other bits unser the edges to stop them wobbling:biggrin:

You will get a bit of waist, long strips and shattered bits, some stuff wont split evenly, big gnarly beech and chewy elm:sneaky2:

I got 3 of these wedges from Clarkes Ochsenkopf Aluminium Twisted Wedges | Clark Forest : Forestry Tools

They are one of the best things I have come across in recent years and will split huge dirty great knotty rings like you wouldn't believe! Bore cut a few slots here and there into the ring and away you go with a sledge hammer. Then the chunjs can be loaded onto the splitter.

On a similar note, I do logs for myself and friends/family from takedowns, so no way commercial like some of you boys, but to have up the sleeve when the maul simply bounces off for tricky, knotty chunks, this little fella from screwfix is gold!

Roughneck Wood Grenade Log Splitter - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys

For £8.50, it's a no-brainer, and works! Even split knarly (Dead) Elm, power itinto the centre of the log, get a little worried that it's going to burry itself in....then pop, the log busts apart!

Won't last forever. But defo recommended.

I've just got one of those for my birthday! Yet to have a go though!
