Tipper probs.

I need some pointers please.

The tipper on my truck has just developed a fault which is that it wont drop properly. It tips fine, but the drop back down takes about 10 minutes, which is obviously unacceptable. The pump part is off a transit (it has a black metal reservoir with the pump bolted to one end, a solenoid on the top and a return valve switch/ valve on the side). It started being really slow all of a sudden a few days back.

What sort of things do i look for?

My first try will be to drain all the fluid out and put fresh in it. I will also remove the pipe from the ram (whilst supporting the butt on a loader) to make sure it isnt the seals in the ram all twisted up (although given that it tips up fine i am assuming they are ok).

What does the release mechanism comprise of, and is it repairable?

Would dirt etc (woodchip dust) cause this?

you could try tipping up then before you lower remove the oil filling cap as i think these have breather holes in , if it drops at proper speed just replace or steam clean it

When you operate the “down” switch it operates a solenoid valve at the bottom of the ram that lets the oil back to tank.

 

By design the valve is intended to let the body down slowly and there is normally a restriction engineered into the system and it can get blocked. Happens a lot with the pick up reel on bailers, usually a hay seed.

 

Before you start stripping things examine the exterior looking for damaged pipes, squashed and not letting the oil back.

I took a return soleniod to bits once because it was jammed and not dropping at all.

 

Was years ago and they are probably a bit different but IIRC the return hole was fairly small so I would imagine it wouldnt take much to cause a bit of a flow problem.

 

Never found anything wrong with the one I took to bits but after a good blast of kerosene and air it worked fine.:thumbup1:

 

I'm sure you know but make sure there is no pressure in the system anywhere when you start to remove bits.

Is it possible that there could be corrosion at all on the solenoid that releases the butt to let it down, resulting in poor effort? Or is that ulikely- ie i wondered if the plunger may be not operating fully?

the solonoid on josharbs landy copnversion i did was rusted solid so we did away with it and fitted a manual valve

Been there and got the T shirt! Had the same trouble as you and went through the same thought process, mine only did it now and then, until I tipped up in the yard one day and the body wouldnt go down, I had to take the pipe of the ram to let the body drop and spill the oil over a pile of woodchip, It turned out to be the solernoid i rang the company that made the body and they sent me one for £25.

If you ve got a strong magnet you can stroke it on the solernoid and it will open the valve and the body will drop :001_smile:

the 12v pump/motor unit has a gauze type filter that sits in the resevoir, a rainy day job but well worth cleaning out every 12 months, the resevoir is usually sealed by an o ring, get a spare one before you strip it, they sometimes go hard, whilst its apart look for a loose small magnet, they seem to just throw them in the resevoir to catch metallic bits rather than bond them to anything!! any bits u need search for tailiftparts.com, cheaper than body builders ive found
