The ectomycorrhizal Scleroderma citrinum (common earth ball) in a not very common location.

but whats it fruiting on?

 

Is it mycorrhizal on live roots or saprotrophic on dead roots?

 

The nearest 'host' is this strawberry tree which is the other side of the foundations of this 100 year old wall?

The next nearest 'host' tree is a Magnolia stellata on the opposite side of the road (4th image),  but i understand Magnolias to have endomycorrhizal associations, not ecto which Scleroderma is.)

 

 

 

Mmmmmm.........
