I split my alder into lengths as soon as possible after felling, normally i can split 12" dia trunks in 3ft lengths in one hit with the axe, once its starts to season its a bit of a pig to split

 

You use an axe!? Hats off to you, Sir, I wouldn't contemplate splitting commercial volumes by hand.:thumbup:

Agreed about splitting green though, I've increasingly come round to the idea of logging green and seasoning in Heras panels. Alder should be fine after 12 months:thumbup1:
