i have been given the task to fix a friends saw,

after my big headed speech to him, about let a pro look at it.

after having a good look, i can't make it even cough or splutter.

so i thought it must be fuel not getting to the carb.

i dont know how to test this..

also has anyone got an idea whats likely to be the problem?

there is a spark from the plug

thanks

Is there any compression?

Will the saw 'hang' from the starter cord at all?

Can you feel a good bit of resistance if you pull the saw over slowly?

Although even a saw with low compression will still fire, sort of.

The carb may be fecked and is just pumping fuel into the cylinder therefore no chance of it starting.

When a 2 stroke floods, and they can from the very first pull it is very difficult to start them.

no the saw wont hang from the starter cord, it just slowly drops.

is that a fair test? the saw feels quite heavy.

how much money am i looking at, to have the cylinder/rings repaired ?

and if it turns out to be the carb, is that repairable or avaliable still?

Pretty fair - you can hang an 090 by the starter, and they weigh a tonne. Have you got a compression tester? A car one will do, as long as it has a valve in the intake that allows the (small) saw engine to pump it up to full pressure. Should be well over 130 psi.

Whip the exhaust off and have a look at the piston - if it is scored to hell, then it will need a new one, maybe a new jug as well. Dunno about 035 parts availability - nothing listed on eBay. Actually, what the hell is an 035? Not listed on Acres Internet either...!

right, i primed the chamber with some fuel, replaced the plug and plug cap.

Don't throw the fuel into the cylinder, chuck half a teaspoon into the carb throat. This will get it into the right place in the cylinder, rather than sitting in the bottom of the crankcase, or going out of the exhaust!

Speaking as a failure to start a friends saw - but from my old 2stoke bike days. Assuming it ran ok recently? Don't touch the carb etc for starters.

See if there is any compression, to much fuel can wash of any oil seal on the piston ring.

place the plug on the side of the cylinder and pull cord to check spark, it should be a thick spark & orange in colour, a weak spark may fail to fire.

Leave the plug out for an hour to dry the cylinder out, then using a new plug try to start again - I have wetted out a few plugs trying to restart before it fired up.

If that fails I could be the carb prob. Good luck
