What volume does a standard builders dumpy bag hold?

Not the volume of logs...just the capacity of the bag...

i am going to guess that you are martin from wood fuel wales, the apparent welsh assembly government funded body set about to become the welsh authority on fuelwoods.

if so i am appauled that you are asking these questions on here when you are supposed to be setting the standards for our industry.

by the time this thread ends ( and i suggest you use the search facility on this forum to look for other threads along this nature) i hope you will be advising that "dumpy bags" are made in all different shapes, sizes and volumes, so buyer beware!! and seller state volume.

i also hope that you do know something of the industry and are not just trying to cover over the excellent work that the recently let go Jos worked hard to achieve.

i am one of your members, and recently took a phonecall off you this week, at the same time i could not belive the questions you were asking me, of which i had to correct you in your quotes and terminoligy.

please take some friendly advice and contact some of your members, ( you know who the good ones are, Jos did!) are research this properly before we all lose faith in what you are trying to achieve.

please feel free to contact me directly if you need help

Dumpy bags come in all shapes and sizes.

My local buliders merchant sells a tonne of sand in a bag measuring 0.8 m each way, hence volume is 0.512 cubic metres. Some bags are exactly 1m each way and so volume is 1 cubic metre. It can be difficult for some people to accept that a bag just 20cm larger each way can have a volume of almost twice as much!

The fabric used can stretch a little and so you get a bulged look to a full bag

If your are quoting the volume of the bags you use then measure them empty and say that is your min volume - the important thing is not to over estimate volumes.

Just clearly( and as accurately as you can) describe your goods eg:-

1 dumpy bag loose logs, min volume 0.5 cubic metres £50

i worked for a builders merchant a few years ago, doing a bit of subby driving.

i went to the local quarry where they bagged up for us.

i picked 6 very full "ton" bags. went over the weighbridge, to find the six bags weighed all of 4.7 tons !!!!!!!

next time you're in a builders merchant, try and get them to confirm the weight of one of their bags......its a good laugh watching them squirm...

i get tired of people asking why i sell my logs in wooden crates.

such and such down the road says he'll do a ton for so much...

but such and such down the road aint got a weighbridge....

so how do you know you're getting a ton ????

i sell mine in 1.2 mtr cube crates, so i advertise them as being a cube. that way, i know no ones getting robbed.

i even advise people to come and choose their own crate, so they know what size, and species of log they're getting.

my cousin whos in the building trade informed me about this the other day when he filled his trailer with 2 tonnes of sand it said on his tickets 2 scoops and was informed "if you go to most builders merchants now, they dont sell by weight, they sell by the scoop, ie.e will give a price of volume of sand etc and put on their tickets, how many scoops youve had, then they are complying with weights and measures."

I guess the volume varies in volume if it bulging too!

First thought:-

As the length of the sides cant increase when bulging in the middle the corners will come in. I am almost positive that the volume will decrease exponentially the more it bulges.

Think of a cardboard box, if you bulge it in one direction the other two sides come in & reduce the volume & if you keep pulling two sides out the other two side meet & you have NO volume at all.

I cant believe i am reading these comments. :001_huh:

VOLUME WILL NOT CHANGE UNLESS FABRIC STRETCHES!!!!!

This is really basic stuff guys, which you will have or should have learnt in physics lessons at your first school!!:001_smile:

Its the same with all natural materials.....they should be sold by volume not weight as water affects weight massively....
