Hornbeam Bleed

Ok, I`m not that hot on tree biology so here goes;

Presently thinning a row of over- populated hornbeams. The trees are under a blanket TPO, had a survey done, therefore permission granted on basis of report.

Found this bleeding on a tree to be retained and wondered if it was something for the customer to worry about?

This tree is about 20" diameter in the stem, around 45- 50 feet high and the bleeding is only upto 2 feet off the ground.

Not done much work on hornbeam, so never seen this before, any help would be good to give as feedback to the customer, cheers, Pete;

Looks like it's been shot Pete!

I came across something similar on some birch and wondered what it was, a row of small wounds in a perfect line, bleeding like mad.

Looked closer and found teeth marks, bloody squiddels.

Could be wounds that have been cause in the winter bleeding cause of the time of year
