Its a good point Stevie, in the past I have been the one to sort out client disputes while working for others. Many worker havent the tact & diplomacy to sort what can start a very basic issue, and it can escalate into something far more serious when it doesnt need to. Some people can be very condescending to younger staff, and even downright rude, best to just ask them to speak to the boss/foreman.

watch that argueing with the customer thing or others on site, isnt cool and you will come across as being agressive rather than inteligent. anyone who works with me gets briefed not to get into talks with anyone, it gets passed onto me and they are escorted out the work site. even if its their own garden. i dont want to loose work because someone takes a hissy fit or tries to make desicions above their pay grade to be blunt:001_smile:

Its true, communication is as much an art as any other aspect of our game. i know a guy who is soooo rude and arrogant it amazes me he is still in business!

Agreed, Ive heard people actually ask for tea while they've been working for me and it makes me cringe beyond belief. Wait til you're asked is what I tell em.....FFS manners cost nothing.

manners is at the top of my list when taking someone on. i couldnt care if you didnt know one end of a brush from the other, if you say please and thank you and know how to do as you are asked then welcome aboard. The rest can be taught. i have worked with guys that were rude and cringeworthy.

Couldn't agree more Andy. I make myself useful by employing the skills in dealing with customers that I developed over 20 years in casinos before getting into tree work, and let the other guys get on with what they are better at. Of course, if the boss is about then it's his call, not mine. :001_cool:

I had a guy who was working for me get into a row with an old boy, we were working out side a library. This old guy wanted to come though where the brash was stacked (there was another way he could go)

 

I came down out the tree, sacked my guy on the spot (he had to get the bus home) and went into the library and apologized.

Returning to Mick's original post I always believed the tales of blokes from Eastern Europe grafting from first light until darkness fell but saw the exact opposite whilst subbing on a large landscape job.

Basic labour was required urgently to simply tidy the site up, i.e. sweeping and barrowing , so an agency was contacted and the next day two mini bus transit vans arrived with guys of all ages from all over the Eastern Block and three teenagers from South London.

The only lads to work hard all day were the Londoners who were both polite and enthusiastic. The European blokes spent the day ducking and diving any work given them, sliding off to the porta loo's and constantly making phone calls. Their attitude to work and manners were non existent with their only interest being "What time do we finish?"!

I know this is only one encounter of working with foreign lads but it also highlights that all British lads aren't work shy mommy's boys.

Thinking about it now tho, My first car i bought off my mum for 300 and insurance cost me 900 so not too much difference 12 years ago

 

I haven't finished Reading the thread but my insurance for my first car, a 1.6 escort was £2200 third party when I was 18, I'm now 22 and pay £300 fully comp for a landy.

 

Oh and if Antibes looking for a hard grafting English boy give me a pm, please!!!
