I agree with others that the gob was way too small, meaning the hinge was poor.

If Jack had been told that by his instructor he could easily of cut a bigger gob.

If the tree was a heavy leaner and the instructor had advised such a small gob, Jack should have had this explained to him and he would have been able to tell us that.

At the very least Jacks instructor should have talked through with him the short comings in the cuts.

Well done for posting Jack.

I think jack is a quality lad. He is a good friend of mine, and I respect him alot. I started one year before Jack so in no way am I valid in fighting off slurs about his felling or private work. But he has only been involved with Arb for 6 months. With no real work placement, and only small amounts of practical work at college (It is a theory based course) but Jack has shown so much interest and put in buckets of hard work into his learning. He frequently climbs, recreationally, but not loads of work climbing. He has learnt loads in his time, he has a naturally ability to climb, a very strong lad for his age, he is also very methodical with his work.

So yes, he has failed to put up traffic control, it was in a cul de sac. A small take down completed in less than two hours. Yes, his hinge wasnt mint. He still has a lot to learn. I think he should be given the right to a bit of slack as he, Like I, is still in the industry a newcomer. He has done great even getting a bit of work I think.

I do though, completely disagree with any negative comments regarding lecturers at Easton college, the 2 main practical tutors there are all top of the game. Trevor Reynolds, A 30+ year experienced Arborist, Is 50 years old. But still one of the best climbers I know, Hes worked all around the world, LA's and loads of other firms. There is very few things anybody could teach him about Arboriculture. Carl Ansell, has been an Arborist for 26 years I believe, owned his own business, covered all kinds of tree care and also Forestry. He is a expert at felling trees, everyone I have met, who knows him well, has said that. They are brilliant teachers and have a great way of really showing you things that matter in the working world. I think they are great for letting students do fells such as that Chestnut, because, yes, they could easily knock it down themselves, but surely part of learning, is actually doing it? They have there full respect from me in every way, and I can say that on behalf of all the students at Easton being taught by them. For those of you on this site who know of who I am speaking of, I am sure you will agree 100%. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, its really not. Its just that I dont like people I think so fondly of being slated by people who really don't know who they are talking about. Matt

For those of us that do not know your two lecturers, we can only go on what jack has said. Incidentally between us we asked him questions before we gave any critique.

Jack said the lecturers were impressed, and that he was happy with the cuts 18 stoner et al have given Jack very good feedback on them.

If Jack was happy with his cuts then the lecturers did not give him realistic feedback themselves.

We can only comment on the information given, the guys who have posted on this thread have a lot of years experience between us so I would suggest we do know what we are talking about.

Jack, it was a very good first attempt, but had faults. Keep going like that and you will have good job prospects.

for only having been in arboriculture for 6 months on a theory based course, i say well done to you m8.

getting private work isnt easy, at 6 months in i wasnt great either i was having real problems with my felling cuts, but im a year and a half in now, and im really finding my feet, so im sure it will be the same for you if you have regular work and practice.

Practice makes perfect, just start off small and work your way up, that way if you make newbie errors they will be minor rather than major!

tbh gobs or sink cuts or whatever you call them are taught a lot smaller on training than what most tree bods do

for a first medium fell it looked better than a lot of cuts i have seen

i am not saying it,s perfect but it,s not that wrong either

Good old Tervor. Worked with him for a bit before he moved to teaching at easton college.

IMO fair play for stepping up and getting stuck in on a fell. When i was training some people just stood back and watched. You are still learing so your not going to be perfect and im sure some of us on here have made some cuts like that at one time or the other including moi.

Have you tried asking tree firms near you if you could tag along for free of course and learn by watching in return for you doing some chipping?
