Hi guys, I'm a student at rca working on a furniture project that needs some large tree logs, approximately 60-80cm diameter. I'm in Battersea/Clapham and I'd love to travel to collect. If anyone happen to have some I would love to buy and collect them. Or can anyone give me some advice on how to get them around London.

I really appreciate your help!

You should find someone willing to sell you some logs.  But you didn’t mention the length.  At that diameter a log of three metres or so could weigh a ton or close to it so transport and handling might be tricky.

Also you need to appreciate that the logs will have a lot of moisture in.  Timber doesn’t really dry properly until milled, especially large logs.

Thank you! The length is about 30-40cm. It's hard for me to find someone selling it at this size around London. And thanks for reminding me about the moisture.

30 to 40cm sounds like the length of a piece of firewood. You could try someone who splits and sells firewood. I’ve found that’s a good source of both short (and longer) milling logs in the past. Any thoughts about the timber species? And, would be interested to see a picture of what you make when it’s finished.

Thank you! I will write another post on the firewood section. Any species is fine. These are some scale models I made, including coffee table, stool, bench etc.

Those look good. Hope you manage to get some suitable logs. Shame I’m in Scotland as I’ve a spalted beech log about 750mm diameter. Currently about 3m long but will probably shorten it before milling and the off cuts would probably be just what you need……….
