Hi Guys, we have broken the shaft to the lower roller on the chipper and obviously need to split the gearbox to fit the replacement. If the gearbox is looking worn out inside we were thinking of revamping or replacing the gearbox (AKB010010) does anyone know where is best to source parts or if anyone has one on the shelf somewhere (new)

Many Thanks

Unless the gears have clashed because the bearings have slogged out it will be fine. The lower feed roller shaft can be made up by any engineering workshop.

You might have to have the shaft bored out of the lowever roller because they can rust together and be impossible to press out. Or spring for a new roller and grub screws.

Nice one 👍 I guess we were expecting the worst, hot had time to split the gearbox down yet. No bearing failure just the shaft snapped, so hopefully all ok. We were going to have a shaft made up but managed to order one for next day delivery so hopefully less downtime

Elmstar in Devon will be your best bet.

Thanks, we ordered the shaft from them yesterday under their online name but didn’t show any gearbox parts 👍

Where did the shaft snap? Don't strip the gearbox because you will have to buy new shaft seals if you do.

Shaft snapped near the roller, where it rests next to the roller on the inside (gearbox side). Surely we will have to strip some of it to put the shaft in the bearing? It looks like the seal for that taps round but haven’t tried yet

You don't have to strip a thing on the Gearbox side

The shaft simply slides into the lower cog ,you don't even have to remove the gearbox.

A :Unbolt the bearing on the feed roller on the opposite side from the GB,now the roller is captive by the metal plate underneath it ( if it's still there).

B:Then remove the tang under the shaft located just towards the GB.

C:Have someone hold the heavy shaft as you take off the two little bolts on the plate under the roller.

Now the roller will come out the bottom.

😧Give broken shaft a wiggle it might slide out by hand if not .Weld a juicy bolt to the remainder of the shaft stuck in the GB and knock it out with a hammer.

If you don't have a welder, then follow steps A-D then Unbolt GB from machine and take it to someone with a welder. There is a sneaky bolt inside the cutter disc housing at the top that you might miss. When reinstalling the GB use Loctite and don't over tighten the bolts because the allow GB housing is pretty soft.

Send £50 in a brown envelope to my address before the next full moon.
