Patients . A whistle . Some treats . Consistency (same call/whistle/command used for the same action ) and when they are young a little and often .  No more than 10 mins max .

I'd stick with a whistle if the handler is a stranger to training dogs, using commands can confuse a dog especially if the dog goes wrong and handler starts shouting to try to get the dog back steady.

Stubby, there is a good article in this months Sporting Shooter about Cockers, if you want a copy I'll scan it and forward it to you.

I'll (read as Mrs Egg) will get onto it this week. I'd send you the magazine but it belongs to an old boy in the village who lets me have his magazines each month but I have to return them.

Pm me your email address.

Just an update, I saw these dog training collars which they said a good device to train dogs, it is inexpensive, safe, and effective. But still, I want to ask the opinion of others if it is safe to use or it is not against animal cruelty. I'm open for more suggestions and recommendations, though.

I'd rather train my dogs by means of positive reinforcement as opposed to punishing bad behaviour. The RSPCA aren't too keen either, and the government has considered banning them in England (they have been illegal in Wales since 2010):
