Petzl flow rope (why not to buy)

Recommended Posts

I bought a petzl flow rope thinking it would be more versatile than my previous Yale blue tongue. However, I know these ropes have different manufacturers but were meant to be similar diameters, but in practise the flow appeared to be much thinner. It’s way more difficult to grip, it runs terribly on zigzag I weigh 82kg and mine slips constantly on this rope even on a relatively new zigzag I only used it once because it was that bad in both DRT and SRT. Also I don’t know if I just had a bad section but towards the top of the rope it has ridged and stiff flat sections which when climbing on hitch cord cause you to drop suddenly. I understand this is just my opinion and I’m interested if other people have had positive experiences with the rope because it was terrible. I’ll be sticking with Yale cordage going forward…

What serial number is your zig zag? There was a recall on them due to slipping recently. Covers quite a wide range of manufacturing dates, because the zig zag is shit.
Pretty sure petzl ropes are made by Cousin who are reputable. Doubt it’s the fault of the rope.

I used zig zags and the second was one of the recall batch, it worked fine for about six months before the spring on the top link gave up. More like free fall than slippage though. Not had a problem with the replacement or the first one which id still going. Definitely worth checking the recall batch numbers and the top link, does it still spring up?

Sounds like the problem is your zigzag, after about six months mine started slipping on petzl flo and cousin atrax which is the same rope, after a long drawn out affair with fr jones where i bought it from the new zigzag finally arrived and there's now no slippage at all, both those ropes work brilliantly with the zigzag they start to self tend almost straight away when using a pulleysaver or ropeguide, the new zigzag release-descend lever is a different colour compared to the original one it almost looks like titanium
