Are fuel cards worth it?

Looking to get a few for the vans but so far the ones I can see a small saving on are the diesel only cards and most exclude premium petrol which we use on our saws/grinders.

Or is it just the convenience of having payment terms and no real saving? There also seems to be a lot of convoluted/hidden costs after the initial 6 months is up.

Any recommendations?

I questioned this as we use All-star and I was far disgusted that we don't get a discount at all but "benefit" from the convenience only. When I ran Barrowcliff's 20+ years back,  I got a discounted accountant the local truck stop which I felt was better than a card used anywhere at that time.

We are paying 148.19 plus vat this week, which is quite a saving.
You need 2 or 3 different cards and play them off against each other, if you just have one you will get screwed, they will phone after a few weeks of not using the card and offer a better price.
Just make sure they don't have a no usage or low usage fee and card issue fee.
If they can f#ck you over they will.

I have fallen out with a couple of Fuelcard outfits over the years.

When you are too busy to keep an eye on prices they will sneak your price up until you call them to order.

A friend of mine used to work for a Fuelcard company and told me that that’s pretty much how they operate and you have to complain on a regular basis to get the best price.

Stay clear of Allstar they are a complete scam.

I used them a few years back, was very busy with around 30 vans on the road. Had a look one month out of curiousity and noticed we was paying above pump price 😳. After going back some 7 months we realised we had payed them over 20k additionally to pump prices. When questioned  they said our company credit score had dropped and in there policy it gives them the ability to charge us more. Couldn’t recover our money and well yes just a complete scam of a firm. Stay well clear. Now with BP and get around 5-10p off per litre roughly.

Thanks for all the responses

Went with Capital on tap in the end as credit limits offered were pointless at £900 on fuel cards

Got accepted straight away, 30k limit and cards for all team leaders foc. 56 day payment terms

1% cash back or slight bonus on top if taken as vouchers (which is a nice bonus as a director as assume can be taken without HMRC needing to know 😉

Referral link below for £75 each if anyone is interested
