VTA Copper Beech Question

Hi all,

Saw this on a walk the other day, mature copper beech (potential graft) with these spiralling 'folds' in the bark. Anyone seen anything like this before and potentially have an explanation of what is going on? Could they be cracks, or just something superficial happening with the bark?

Trying to learn is all!

Thanks a bunch

Hi,
I have seen similar on beech and other trees. I think in mattheck it says an uneven crown can cause twisting of the stem. When I have seen it I haven't been able to see a significantly uneven crown. So not sure of the cause.
Sure someone more knowledgeable will put me right!

Hi  , sure it's not a clump planting, seen those in past  when two or three plants planted together many years ago mainly Beech, have had to deal with a couple of mature one which decided to unwind themselves, really interesting to take down tension and compression all over the place
