My experience of generators is you definitely get what you pay for.  After many false starts with cheapies, now have a Honda EU2i and it's brilliant.

 

They are expensive to buy - but hold their value if you ever come to sell it.  Spares are easy to get, they are easy to service, quiet running, nothing ever seems to go wrong and it always starts without hassle.  There is a very similar model made by Yamaha that's also very good - but it's a similar price to the Honda.

Had this loncin for 6-7 years no problems at all , only downside is heavy lump but nothing wheel barrow can't sort out, think paid around £350 ish

I've also kept thinking about a small genny for general stuff, I would definitely look at the Clarke inverter ones.

I’ve picked up a stephill (rebadged Honda) inverter genny for £100 two years ago, it’s run at least 4 hours a day since and has been faultless!

I had a little cheap ALDI generator, used it a fair bit and it was fine. Sold it to a mate when we moved recently still going well. Can’t remember how much it was but it wasn’t expensive and was fine for odd jobs here and there.
