Pickup body conversion

Anybody clued up about pickup body conversions from a legal and insurance point?

I have a single cab Isuzu Dmax and the standard tub is next to useless. I'd like to build a full height arb type body on it, and something I could easily do myself.

I've seen a lot of diy body projects but not sure how they stand when it comes to approval, if required?

I'm reluctant to take it to a body builder, firstly because of the silly prices they quote, and also what I've heard about shoddy workmanship from some well known 'specialist' converters.

Any info really appreciated before I get the welder out.

Thanks

I've been thinking about doing something similar. One idea would be to buy a trailer and use that. Remove the towbar and axle and mount it on the frame on the pickup. Buy from a manufacturer that offer accessories like mesh sides/double sides, etc. It would also make it easy to get spare parts.

Hi,

Got mine done by RBG (who advertise on here) really pleased with it, made the truck much more useable. Paid just over a grand.

Told insurance company and they were fine.

I know you can buy all the aluminium panels/hinges etc on EBay but I'm sure you could get a better deal buying direct.

Sounds good! I'll give the insurance a ring and see what they say, I'm with Admiral so not a Mickey mouse company. I'll post up re the response I get. Cheers

In my experience they’re one of the worst. I had a claim with them and they fought me every step of the way. I had a defender stolen and ended up loosing a lot of money as they wouldn’t honour the value of the vehicle. Also lots of hidden charges when you have to claim. Never again.
