Beech trees leafing out at different times

Hi everyone,

Our neighbour has what I'm almost certain is a beech tree and we also have beech trees in our garden, every year their tree will leaf out about 2 weeks before ours. I've always thought it strange so can anyone explain why this would happen or is it simply the fact that one of them isn't beech after all.

Cheers

All the photos look like beech to me.

The obvious answer would be provenance, one of the trees genes had evolved in a different environment from the other. Seeds had been collected, germinated and planted in the same spot.

Having said that there is one 70ish year old oak opposite me that retains its leaves well after the other dozen or so and they all will have been self seeded, acorns don't travel far. They all flush at much the same time.

I have notice huge differences in the timing of neighboring oaks leafing out and shedding.

Year after year, same trees following the same behaviour.

(I know behaviour isn’t the right word btw)

Thanks for the input guys. As you've said, the fact that they could have different genes is likely the answer. I can't say I ever noticed anything similar happening elsewhere but I'm sure it's something I'll come across more often now I'm more aware about it.

Thanks for your help!
