Nifty-lift, battery powered platform, aaaaaaaaaaargggh, bateries died after an hours use. Hirer hadnt charged it up!

Simon lift on swb landy for line clearance, aaaaaaarrrrrrgh. terribly unstable on the raod due to being top-heavy. Real bad point..... the lever mechanisms ran out side the box to just beneath... when reducing thorn hedges was prone to catching twigs in the mechanism causing sudden and dangerous activation in the direction you didnt want to be going!

Genie boom.. 120ft lift... cool, driving along the road at full height from tree to tree, weaving round parked cars, oh and swinging out sideways over people houses and pointing at their chimneys and tut-tutting so they could hear. Excellent viewing platform for the total eclipse of the sun too!!

Have used the Teupen machines- 22 and 30m. Found to be reliable and manoeverable. The 30m had excellent reach and was surprisingly stable at full extension. Both are tracked so easy to get into position.

This is the order in which I rate the manufactuers.

 

JLG: are the best built machines, smooth operation (possibly the RR of machines), access to their web site for service info is resticted. Parts available next day usually.

 

Genie: well built machines but cutting back on build quality (the 135/70 could be a great machine for large tree work). Towable lifts are good valve and well desgined. All parts/service manuals available on the web site.

Nifftylift: some of their range are well suited to tree work on rough ground (wheeled 4wd 170SD and 210SD with leveling arms), the new self powered HR17 & 21's are good machines. I've not had anything to do with their tracked machine so unable to comment. Service support by phone not to bad, helpful techs depending on who you get. Some parts can take time to recieve.

 

Oil & Steel: Good machines for the owner operator who will look after them, not regarded as a strong Hire Fleet Machine (the electronic control boards can cause problems if the battery is allowed to be in a low state of charge, battery is not charged by the engine!).

Parts supply can be a long wait.

Note: Some of their small vehicle mounted booms when fitted (depending on the chassis) exceed the 3.5 tonne gvw.

 

Teupen: seem good machines from what other service engineers say, not as yet had any reason to work on them.

 

Haulotte: They're french, very little tech back up in the UK. Just had a boom machine repaired with an electronic problem, had to get a guy over from france and he only spoke french.

 

We also have a few 60ft booms based on 360 tracked chassis (japanise built) not the fastest machine but will go anywhere mostly..
