Help with an old 076AV Stihl sizing

Hi folks - I am new to a lot of this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friends very old 076AV Stihl saw with what i believe to be a 36" bar and rip chain. The problem is that my friend had the lack of wisdom to lend me an electric chain sharpener with which i have managed to butcher the chain by carefully setting it to the wrong angle. Going forwards I will stick to manual methods.

My question is this - is it possible to get a new chain for this and if so what chain does it require and how could I work this out.

The information I have on the side of the bar is as follows:

Stihl 1.6

12.87

3002 001 8052

One of the chains i have for the machine has 27 written on the teeth though I am unsure what it refers to as there are many more links than that.

Any help with finding details of the chain i am using (what the correct angle is ) and where i can buy a new one would be great!

All the best,

Stu

It looks like an old school stellite tipped solid nose bar (I cannot see the type of nose for sure but the overheated tip suggests this) with a 1.6mm slot for the chain to run in, probably 36" so needs 108 drive link chain and the chain on it looks like a 0.404 full chisel (the 27 refers to the style of chain).

From the state of the chain I'd say it has hit something hard and then continued being used

There is quite a lot of life left in the chain once it has been sharpened and the depth gauges filed.

Absolutely right about a sharpen and a depth gauge/raker file. You might lose a third of its cutters and take the best out of a new file to get it back to perfection, but perfectly do-able.

As another beginner the best advice would be take the bar number to a shop and get a chain to match as stated above. If your friend wants to mill wood get a ripper chain, if he is going to use it as a normal saw just get what is listed. If you want to sharpen the chain go to this page:-

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or require further information on any our products. >Videos of all...

and read through that page a few times, then order a ripping chain if that's what he needs and sharpen the old chain for crosscutting as sharpening practice. The chain is a oregon chain 0.404" x 0.063". The Stihl cross reference states 0.404" x 0.063" x 36" Duromatic bar with 104 drive links but count the drive links on the old chain. Then go back and read the FAQS page again as it's full of good information.
