Apparently the big sequoia often shattered when they fell, and the Giant Redwood timber was not highly regarded so the whole exercise was often pointless.  Coast Redwood is far superior, but the Giant Sequoias were largely felled for the hell of it according to my books.

Wonder how many tree guys on here would have cut it back then.

Even if we wanted to, where would we start?? The big one looks to be fifteen foot across, if we take the guy to be five feet tall (people were shorter back then). I suppose with a seven foot bar on an 880 it would be theoretically possible to get the cuts to meet up. If it was wider than 14" then you'd have a chunk of holding wood in the center that you'd have to bore out through the gob side. I wouldn't fancy it.

I mean using the old tools not an 880 with a 7 foot bar

Yeah I remember reading about two guys business types over there who had a bet on for who could fell the tallest tree. You can bet it wasn't any use felling a 100m+ tree in the middle of the woods. Plonkers.

There is a good majority of the industry that can't use a rake properly so I'd say the likelihood of them using a crosscut saw is slim
