Cutting rogue tree root without upsetting tree

Hi, I’m about to put the sub base down for new patio. There’s a fairly big root system at ground level that was pushing the old concrete base up. Was wondering where would be a fairly safe place to cut the root? Thanks Chris

Best cut would be +/- 500mm above ground level at the stem of the tree....

Better would have been to put raised decking over the root area after locating main run of roots then put structure on pads , not expose roots to dry out whilst photographing them . But its done now  :/  K
