Sod that. That just makes the situation worse. Set yourself up to be a slave to a shit corrupt system.
More to life.

Yes and no.

To clarify, if you wish to save up for a Mortgage and you’re on a lower wage or the house prices put the area or type of house you want out of your reach and you really want that then you’re gonna have to work hard to achieve that goal. Once you have your eye watering deposit, and once you’ve satisfied the bank you can maintain that level of income then you’ll get your house/flat. After that you can relax and settle into just making your mortgage payments each month, that’s quite often lower than what they where paying in rent before.

If nothing else you’re breaking the shackles of being a rent slave for the rest of your life.

It's all about lifestyle choices. I've owned houses. Could easily buy another if I wanted. I choose a different lifestyle. Preferring to spend time with my kids while they are young (well not that young now) and work towards bettering my own life. Not work towards paying a bank most of my wages.
You are fortunate with your job that you earn well and have interesting schedule. I wouldn't enjoy your job though and it's important to me that I do something I enjoy.
I understand your point though and would buy another house if the choices were full market rent for a terrace or buy my own.

I can count at least 20 people/families within ten miles of me, who built their own homes "illegally" (myself included). Wildly different styles, varying outlay, all way way below market price. They all bought land though, or have the use of land. I built my home at 18 and lived there for 8 years. Off grid. Cost 3 grand and about six months of labour, total. It's still standing, 20+ years on....helped a family member set up his first family home, ten grand cabin. Raised two kids in it for years before the main house was finished...three neighbours built illegally, raised their families, paid no rent and no mortgage, shat in buckets for years. One crowd got hassle but brassed it out and saved enough to build several legal houses and now they're landlords themselves.

It can be done, but requires a big mentality adjustment. Area dependant as well. Not gonna fly in SW UK obviously...

My mate did it in Cornwall. Earthship on his parents farm. Not visible till you pull in. Just looks like a hill /mound.
Is possible on the right land

I'm very happy for your friend but how ridiculous is it that you have to hide building a house on your own land?

The planning laws need to be overhauled to favour self builders and small, sustainable developments. At the moment the government is in the pocket of the big developers like Persimmon.

The planners are agents of a rigged system. The system is crooked. So when the "mafia" deem building shelter for yourself "illegal" - unless you are wealthy enough - many folks give it the middle finger. At some point we have to ask ourselves, do we want to exist to serve the State and the investor class, or do we exercise our moral rights as men and women?
