Im after advise.  I own a woodland that I manage myself and sell firewood.  We are turning the site into a holiday site for log cabins etc so want the trees as safe as possible.  We have quite a few trees mainly oak & ash upto 15" that have dead lower branches upto 4" diameter.  most trees are like lolipops.  I was thinking about learning to climb & cut the occational limb.  Is this advisable?  also what courses would I need to do?  Its only for use on my own land.  I have used chainsaws for many years however dont have any tickets or formal training.  thanks in advance.

Spend decent money on a good (eg Silky) pole saw that will reach 5m easy. They do longer but the disadvantage of going super long is being heavier than it needs to be when shortened down.

That's what I'd use for lower limbs anyway, you will save thousands not buying the climbing gear and training. It's a lot quicker and easier to pole saw than climb.

Well, if yr going for it as a commercial enterprise, best get the trees in the area assessed and get a climber in fr a day or so to deadwood. Then you have the paperwork to defend any failure that leads to a claim in the future. K
