As Gary says, they will need more TLC but many people cope. A large heavy pot will help but there are various ways to anchor pots.

 

I'd try and find a specialist nursery that expects people to grow the tree in a large container and ask their advice.

At that tree size I would worry abt anchoring - Big Pot tree planting is common in the states where water usage is important . Dunno why you would bother leaving Birch in a pot . K

Birch in a pot !! tracery of branches, winter colour for stem, light leaf shade I think it has a lot going for it

There are a lot of situations where planting into the ground isn’t possible, potted trees give you the opportunity to give height, shade and screening, you would be missing out by taking the blinker view that you could only plant in the ground
