Hi all,

I'm looking to pot 3 Silver Birch trees in a slabbed area at the back of my garden. I'd like any advise on the size of pot I would require? Any other useful tip would also be greatly appreciated.

They will be the following size. Silver Birch Single stem Betula Jacquemontii 12/14 girth 14ft including pot height

Thanks in advance Phil.

Pot size will be down to how much care and time you want to spend on the tree

to have a real chance I would be looking for a 850/1000 litre pot with and irrigation system and good drainage, depending on prevailing wind you might also require a guy system deadman would be the least intrusive The trees would have a finite life in the pot before they out grow 10 / 20 years maybe then cut down and start again

A couple i worked for years ago planted a couple of copper beech trees(about12ft tall) in some big old galvanised water butts that they bought at a farm sale, the trees seem to do ok in them but they do a lot of watering and feeding and every couple years they lifted them out with a telehandler and pruned the roots and replanted. To my knowledge they have never blown over.

Baffling.... 😕 K

Why's it baffling? Plenty of people grow trees in pots for all sorts of reasons. Someone renting for example.

As Gary says, they will need more TLC but many people cope. A large heavy pot will help but there are various ways to anchor pots.

I'd try and find a specialist nursery that expects people to grow the tree in a large container and ask their advice.
